Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup hopes in doubt after defeat to Benin Republic

Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup took a significant hit following a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic.

The Super Eagles, who aimed to recover from their recent 1-1 draw with South Africa, initially took the lead through a stunning finish by Raphael Onyedika in the first half.

However, the momentum shifted before halftime, with Benin Republic scoring twice courtesy of Jodel Dossou and Steve Mounie.

The Super Eagles have failed to win any of their first 4 World Cup qualifiers.

The result places Benin Republic at the top of Group C with seven points, while Nigeria languishes in fifth place with just three points.

The defeat raises serious concerns for the Super Eagles’ World Cup campaign, leaving them with a challenging path ahead to secure qualification.
