The Rivers State House of Assembly has taken action following an oil spill from a Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) pipeline.
The spill which has ravaged several communities in Bonny Local Government Area, Rivers State, including Iloma, Epelema, Orupiri, Ayaminima, Minima, Oloma, and Oguede, occurred on November 22, 2024.
The state legislature led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, passed a resolution mandating its committee on Public Complaint to investigate the cause of the damage.
The committee will visit affected communities, assess the damage, and provide recommendations to alleviate suffering.
The resolution follows a petition presented by Leader Sokari Goodbye Sokari on behalf of the Minima Community, urging the House to address the environmental disaster. Amaopusenibo Kingsley Hart signed the petition, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
The House also gave the first reading to the Rivers State Real Estate Regulatory Authority Bill 2024 and the Rivers State College of Nursing Sciences Bill 2024.
