No date yet for NEC meeting to decide fate of Peter Obi – Labour Party faction

A faction of the Labour Party (LP) says it has yet to fix a date for its next National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, where the fate of party chieftains accused of anti-party activities, including Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti, will be decided.

Ayo Olorunfemi, deputy national chairman of the party, made this known in an interview with a national newspaper.

His clarification comes days after Abayomi Arabambi, factional national publicity secretary of the LP, claimed that Peter Obi would soon be expelled from the party for alleged anti-party conduct.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief last Tuesday, Arabambi accused Obi, the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, of undermining the party by openly supporting the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He insisted that Obi’s involvement with ADC amounted to holding dual political allegiance, which he described as unconstitutional.

Despite the claims, Obi has maintained that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party.

Olorunfemi, however, said only a properly convened NEC meeting has the power to take disciplinary action on such issues.

His words: “I think we are due for another National Executive Council meeting, especially in the face of recent developments.

“We need to obtain the mandate from the owners of the party. I am talking about the NEC.

“But definitely, we will have our NEC meeting where decisions relating to the activities of Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti will be taken.”
