“A disturbing tragedy” – Tinubu mourns Iranian president killed in helicopter crash

President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials in a helicopter crash.

The incident occurred on Sunday when a helicopter carrying President Raisi and nine others crashed due to poor weather conditions in the mountains near the Azerbaijan border.

The crash was confirmed by officials and state media on Monday.

Rescue teams launched a search operation on Sunday afternoon after the helicopter went missing. By Monday morning, relief workers located the wreckage and identified the bodies of the president and the other passengers, as reported by State TV.

In a statement issued by Tinubu’s Spokesperson, Mr Ajuri Ngelale, The president expressed his profound grief over the tragedy, describing President Raisi as a dedicated leader committed to Iran’s development.

“President Tinubu expresses profound grief over this disturbing tragedy and describes President Raisi as a leader who was passionately committed to the development of Iran,” the statement read.

President Tinubu also extended his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the continuous peace, stability, and prosperity of the Iranian nation. 

He assured the Islamic Republic of Nigeria’s support and prayers during this moment of grief.
