Northern Group Urges Muslims to Forgive Shettima over ‘Anti-Islamic’ Comment

The North-East Progressive Coalition (NEPC) has pleaded with Muslims across Nigeria to forgive vice president Kashim Shettima over his “anti-Islamic” comment in the build up to the National Assembly leadership elections.

Politics Nigeria recalls that Shettima had advised lawmakers, particularly in the Senate, to elect an incompetent Southern Christian over the most qualified Norther Muslim in the race.

“Under the current dispensation, the most incompetent southern Christian is better than the most puritanical northern Muslim for the presidency of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,“ Shettima declared.

The vice president’s comment has continued to generate mixed reactions despite his apology.

But in a statement on Monday, the NEPC, Muhammed Konto Mafa, urged Muslims in the country to accept Shettima’s apology as mere human error.

“Nigerians and indeed the North, particularly, should understand that the Vice President is a man of great honour and will not do anything against the people. As we are all humans, we should consider the better side of the Vice President. To err is human; to forgive is divine,” Mafa pleaded.
