Obaseki, Shaibu rift widens as Edo gov moves deputy’s office from govt house

An emerging report on Saturday, September 2, confirms that the rift between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, is getting even wider.

Daily Trust reports that the Edo state government has moved the office of Shaibu out from the Government House in Benin City, the state capital.

It was gathered that the new location of Shaibu’s office is No 7, Dennis Osadebey Avenue, not far from Government House.

It used to be the state Public Procurement Office commissioned by former Governor Adams Oshiomhole in 2014.

The commissioner for communication and orientation, Chris Nehikhare, when contacted by reporters on the development, said, “If there is a government sign board saying so, then it must be so.”

The cold war between Obaseki and Shaibu (a native of Edo North Central) stemmed from the latter’s decision to succeed his principal, whereas the governor, an indigene of Benin in Edo South, is pushing for a successor from Esanland in Edo Central senatorial district.

Shaibu had staged a walkout of an event organised by the government after his aides were forced out of an event location.

This happened barely 24 hours after a Department of State Services (DSS) operative denied Shaibu access to Governor Godwin Obaseki in another ceremony.
