Ogun Teacher Faces Backlash as Pupil Dies After 162 Frog Jump Punishment

A sombre atmosphere has gripped Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State following the death of a secondary school pupil, Ariyo Monday, reportedly after receiving a severe punishment.

Ariyo, a student at Obafemi Grammar School, allegedly endured 24 strokes of the cane and 162 frog jumps, which witnesses say contributed to his death.

The incident unfolded after a teacher, upset by Ariyo’s comment regarding a dustbin bought with students’ funds, reported him to the school’s principal, leading to disciplinary action.

According to an activist, Justadetoun, who shared details online, Ariyo’s comment appeared to offend the teacher, sparking the drastic punishment.

“His response offended the teacher, who reported him to the principal,” Justadetoun stated. “Ariyo was flogged 164 times, collapsing in the process.”

A video circulating online shows Ariyo on a hospital bed, visibly struggling and groaning as he received medical attention.

Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident, stating that, contrary to some reports, Ariyo received 24 strokes of the cane in addition to the frog jumps.

“The incident happened on October 15, 2024. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention and, unfortunately, died on Friday,” Odutola reported.

Authorities have since deposited Ariyo’s body at Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy as investigations continue.

The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for a thorough probe into school disciplinary practices and accountability for those involved.
