Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has expressed support for President Tinubu’s decision to consider releasing Nnamdi Kanu from detention.
According to a press release issued on Thursday and signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary General of the organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo disclosed that the anticipated date for Kanu’s release is December 2023.
The organisation said the president’s decision would have “significant implications for the political landscape in the Southeast.” The group also warned against any attempt by “mischievous Igbo political elites and deviant opportunists” to take credit for Kanu’s release.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges President Tinubu not to entertain any visits or demands from these individuals,” the press release said. “The credit for Kanu’s release should solely be attributed to him.”
The group also said that Kanu’s release would “gradually diminish the rising popularity of both Peter Obi and Simon Ekpa in the Southeast.”
“Politically, the Igbo nation will consider President Tinubu as a viable candidate over Peter Obi in the 2027 elections,” the organisation added in the press release.
“Additionally, from a security perspective, Ekpa’s disruptive activities and terrorist tendencies in the Southeast will be consigned to the annals of history.”
Ohanaeze Ndigbo urged President Tinubu to remain resolute in his decision-making process regarding Kanu’s release.
“We assure him that the Igbo nation stands behind him,” the press release said. “We trust that he will handle this matter with utmost care and consideration.”
I really want the guy to be released and our Igbo brothers should also play politics ,i mean real politics and not one politics they have been playing since 1999.

I do not understand what is really wrong with those idiots in Ohaneze Ndi Igbo. What nonsense are they talking about Peter Obi? Those fools do not speak for the Igbos anymore. And, for the records, none of those charlatans and opportunists in Ohaneze is an inch close to Peter Obi’s integrity/personality and popularity; and, Peter isn’t riding on the back of Nnamdi Kanu’s incarceration. Come 2027, their hatred and envy towards Peter Obi isn’t going to stop Nigerians(including Igbos) from voting in their true President!

I am not sure that guy is now sober and remorseful. But am sure he would be welcomed as a messiah and hero among a huge Igbo population in Nigeria and in the diaspora but that is not even the issue. He would be goaded on to remain antagonistic to government and a renewed fundamentalism is poised to take over the region.

He should be compensated after his release
Truth is that the violence and unrest in the east is now beyond kanu. Even if he is released the criminal elements that have hijacked the movement wouldn’t relent as any call by him for peace would be seen as sabotage. More so i doubt if he would come out ” born again” without returning to the antics that landed him there to start with. As for ohaneze ( whatever they represent) , they are just a bunch of confused old men seeking relevance & patronage. So what will make BAT a viable option in 2027 is kanu’s release? Were the ibos relevant in his emergence in 2023?
