Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritize implementing the 2014 National Conference recommendations.
The appeal comes in response to recent discussions and demands for a new constitution and economic reforms.
In a statement by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the group expressed deep appreciation to The Patriots, led by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, for their efforts to secure a “People’s Democratic Pluralistic Constitution” for Nigeria.
While supporting The Patriots’ general goals, Ohanaeze Ndigbo cautioned against the immediate convening of a National Constituent Assembly, citing concerns over the current socio-economic climate and potential international interference.
Instead, the organization advocated for the implementation of the 2014 National Conference recommendations as a more timely and effective measure.
Part of the statement read: ”NDIGBO respectfully disagrees with the proposal for a National Constituent Assembly at this time.
”Given the recent hunger protests and rumors of international interference, we believe that convening such an assembly would be ill-timed and insensitive to the current challenges facing our nation.
OHANAEZE NDIGBO acknowledges the historical injustices faced by the Igbo people in Nigeria, including marginalization in state allocation, federal appointments, and infrastructure development.
”We reflect on the recommendations of past constitutional conferences and assemblies, such as the 2005 National Political Confab and the 2014 National Conference, which highlighted the need for additional states in the Southeast region.”
