The Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, has calmed fears stirred by rumours of an alleged plan by bandits to attack St. Francis Catholic Church, insisting that the town remains peaceful and secure.
Addressing journalists on Saturday, the revered monarch dismissed the viral claims as baseless and misleading, saying they were designed to spread fear among residents.
“There is no truth in those rumours. Owo is peaceful, and there’s no threat looming over us,” Oba Ogunoye said firmly. “What is being circulated is fake news, clearly intended to cause panic.”
But speaking with journalists on Saturday, Oba Ogunoye dismissed the story as false and misleading, insisting there was no credible threat to the community.
“There’s no truth in what is being spread,” the monarch said. “Owo remains calm and peaceful. These rumours are just an attempt to stir fear and disrupt the peace we’ve worked so hard to maintain.”
He acknowledged that his palace regularly holds meetings with security agencies—a longstanding part of their strategy to keep the town safe. However, he made it clear that there was no cause for alarm and no special emergency summit had been called in response to the rumour.
“We don’t wait for panic to drive our actions,” he said. “Security is always a priority in Owo, and our engagement with the relevant agencies is consistent. What’s being circulated is completely unfounded.”
“This kind of falsehood is not just reckless, it’s dangerous,” he warned.
