Omicron: Nigeria records spike in COVID-19 cases, plans to vaccinate 70% of people next year

As of Monday, Nigeria had recorded 167 cases of COVID-19, a triple jump over the 55 recorded on Sunday due to a neglect of preventive measures at airports and other points of entry in Nigeria.

In Lagos, 133 cases were surfacing. However, the NCDC have yet offering any explanation for the explosion. Thankfully, for two consecutive days, no deaths were reported. Currently, a total of 214,218 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Nigeria.

The Federal Ministry of Health has increased public health response efforts against COVID-19 in the country since the discovery of the Omicron variant. Despite the destination countries, all departed travelers must show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 PCR test performed no later than 48 hours prior to departure.

In Abuja, the Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19, Mr. Boss Mustapha, assured that 70 percent of the Nigerian population will be vaccinated before the end of 2022.

He stated, “We need to encourage all eligible persons to get vaccinated and keep observing washing of hands, wearing of face masks, keeping physical distance and avoiding crowded areas.”

Other expectations will include the formulation of practical proposals to President Muhammadu Buhari on the governance structure, resources, and policies required to eliminate COVID-19 in Nigeria by December 31, 2022, also restoring the healthcare system and the economy so that future threats may be dealt with effectively.
