Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, has dismissed the president’s nickname, “T-Pain,” amid growing discontent over Nigeria’s economic challenges.
The term has emerged from a frustrated populace blaming Tinubu’s policies for escalating hardship across the nation.
In a recent interview with Channels TV, Onanuga addressed the situation, clarifying, “The President is aware that the citizens are going through some difficulties, but he is not aware that some persons have labelled him T-Pain on social media. The president does not read what is on social media.”
He underscored that Tinubu’s intent is not to cause suffering, stating, “He has not come to inflict pain on Nigerians but to repair the economy.”
Onanuga highlighted that the nickname is a product of mischief and should not be taken seriously, noting, “Some people, out of mischief, just say somebody is a T-Pain. He (Tinubu) is not T-Pain.”
The backlash against Tinubu’s administration stems from citizens grappling with economic downturns, prompting many to voice their frustration through social media.
Onanuga’s comments attempt to reframe the narrative surrounding Tinubu’s leadership, suggesting that the focus should be on the government’s efforts to improve the economic situation rather than the negative labels circulating online.
