Ondo election: Trouble for Aiyedatiwa as Akeredolu’s loyalists declare support for ex-commissioner

There are strong indications that Ondo governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, may have a hard time winning the state’s forthcoming election scheduled for November 2024.

This is even as prominent politicians of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who are loyal to Late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu have declared their support for the former commissioner finance, Wale Akinterinwa.

According to Akinterinwa, Late Akeredolu “anointed him” as the next governor of the state before his death on December 27, 2023.

A top APC source also corroborated Akinterinwa’s claim.

“I can tell you authoritatively that Akinteriwa is the choice of majority of those working with the late governor, Akeredolu. He had anointed him before he died. Unfortunately, he was not strong enough to make it publicly before he died,” the source said.

“The governor will run, but he will meet a formidable opposition in the state, especially among the late governor’s loyalists.”

Politics Nigeria reports that more aspirants are bracing up for the APC governorship primary election in Ondo State.

They include a former member of the House of Representatives, Mayowa Akinfolarin; the former Secretary to the State Government, Oladunni Odu; former Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Prof Francis Faduyile; former aspirant of the APC, Chief Olusola Oke; Gbenga Edema among others.

One of the aspirants, Akinfolarin said Ondo state needed someone that would bridge the gap between the government and the people, and he was the one that could make it possible.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, who took over after Akeredolu’s passing, has barely few months to make a statement in the minds of the electorates in Ondo State before the polls.
