One officer killed, another abducted as bandits attack Nigeria Customs base in Kebbi

Bandits have attacked a Nigeria Customs Service patrol base in Koko, resulting in the death of one officer and the abduction of another.

According to a press statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Kebbi Area Command, Mohammed Tajuddeen Salisu, the attack occurred on Thursday, July 25, 2024, around 9:00 PM.

The assailants, who were reportedly targeting the patrol base as part of their opposition to recent anti-smuggling operations in the area, inflicted significant damage to the facility.

The statement revealed that the armed men not only destroyed property at the base but also targeted two customs officers.

Assistant Superintendent Customs I, Dabo Umar, was tragically killed during the attack, while Superintendent of Customs Babagana Abba Kabiru was abducted. The kidnappers have demanded a substantial ransom for Kabiru’s release.

The body of the deceased officer has been recovered and transported to Kaduna for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

In response to the attack, a manhunt has been initiated to apprehend the perpetrators and secure the release of the kidnapped officer.

Customs Area Controller Iheanacho Ernest Ojike expressed condolences to the family of the deceased officer and urged the public to assist with any information that could aid in locating and freeing the abducted officer.

The statement also assured that other security agencies are collaborating in the search and investigation.

“We will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the affected officers during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
