Online petition demands President Buhari be tried in ICC for crimes against humanity

An online petition has been initiated on the web-based petition aggregator, change.org, to criminally charge President Muhammadu Buhari for violations against human rights.

The petition is headed “Petition to the ICC To Arraign Muhammadu Buhari for Crimes Against Humanity”, and it had over 350,000 signatures as of the time of reporting.

Reno Omokri, a former Special Assistant to Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, started the petition.

“Head of State of Nigeria President Mohammadu Buhari should be held directly responsible for this heinous crime against humanity,” the petition reads in part.

It also demands that those responsible for the Lekki tollgate atrocity be brought to justice, stating that “under no circumstances should civilians be shot by soldiers in a civilised world”.

The Lagos State judicial panel investigating SARS-related abuses delivered its findings to the state administration on Monday.

The results of the panel, which was established to examine the shooting of peaceful demonstrators at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos during anti-police brutality rallies in October 2020, found that at least nine people died due to the incident.

The killing was also referred to as a “massacre” by the panel.
