Opposition can remove Tinubu from power, says Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that the opposition can remove President Bola Tinubu from office, citing widespread hunger and public discontent.

Amaechi made the statement during his 60th birthday celebration held on Saturday in Abuja, where he addressed the current state of the nation and the role of the opposition.

His words: “We are all hungry. All of us are. If you are not hungry, I am. So, for us the opposition, if you want us to remove the man in power (Tinubu), we can remove him from this power.”

Reflecting on his activism as a student leader, Amaechi recalled his involvement in organizing protests against former military rulers Ibrahim Babangida and Muhammadu Buhari, emphasizing the unity that once existed among Nigerian students across ethnic lines.

“As students, we organized the Tai Solarin protest against Babangida and we also organized protests against Buhari. Back then, there was no North and South among us,” he said.

Amaechi recounted how protests were coordinated nationwide, with key planning meetings held in Kano and simultaneous actions executed
across universities, including Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), and the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

“You would see young, handsome Northerners and Southerners eating together, feeling free with one another.

“But today, we have poisoned the minds of our young men. They can’t even liberate themselves, we were able to liberate ourselves,” he lamented.
