Opposition Parties Stun PDP, Secure Victories in Bauchi State Local Government Elections

Opposition parties in Bauchi State, have secured several councillor seats in the recent local government council elections.

The state, controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration of Governor Bala Mohammed, saw opposition parties make gains in various wards.

Samira Maikano of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) emerged victorious in the Wandi Ward councillorship election in the Dass Local Government Area, polling 1,610 votes and defeating her closest rival, Bashir Abdullahi of the PDP, who received 1,352 votes. The All Progressives Congress (APC) trailed behind with 230 votes.

In the Darazo Local Government Area, Yunusa Muhammed of the African Action Congress (AAC) won the Papa North Councillorship Seat with 1,156 votes, defeating Ashiru Muhammad of the PDP, who received 1,053 votes, and Idris Muhammad of the APC, who got 290 votes.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party received the highest number of votes in Lusa Ward, Bogoro Local Government Area, despite not fielding a candidate. Lucy Yusuf of the PDP, the second runner-up, was declared the winner, with the Labour Party receiving 2,200 votes, the PDP 2,168 votes, and the APC 275 votes.

A total of 323 candidates contested for councillor seats in the state from 10 political parties. Results for the chairmanship elections are still pending.
