As voting continues in the 2022 Osun State governorship election, the Oluwo of Iwo land, Adewale Akanbi (Telu 1), has said that vote-buying cannot stop at the present time, due to the way Nigerian politicians run the system.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the monarch was speaking to the press after casting his vote at Unit 1 Ward 2, in Iwo town Iwo Local Government Area (LGA).
“Vote buying is a challenge to democracy. The populace does not have hope. They are getting what they can get. It is a bad situation. We do not know when to get out of it. The new breeds of politicians will help us to get out of it but people are hungry. They need food. Vote buying cannot stop now until we see real dividends of democracy,” he said.
Buying of votes was noticed across many polling units in the ongoing Saturday governorship election in Osun State.
This newspaper’s reporter, who monitored the election, reports that incidents of vote buying were recorded in many polling centres visited.
Concerned individuals, who are also voters, alleged that some people believed to be working for politicians, suddenly arrived various polling centres and offered money to induce those already on queues to vote for their candidates.
