Shops were razed on Saturday as a fire at the male hostel of Veritas University, Abuja, unsettled the institution’s community.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the fire outbreak started in the midnight: 10 makeshift shops got razed.
Most reports said the fire was caused by a spark from the school’s generating set. The generating set’s house exploded which caused a shop close to it to go up in flames, before extending to the others.
Students tried to put out the fire before the arrival of the firefighters.
A representative of the institution confirmed the incident.
Media reports showed that between 2019 and 2021, Nigeria experienced severe fire incidents, leading to 79 deaths out of 68 fires recorded in 18 months.
Also, statistics from the Federal Fire Service (FFS) indicates that between 2020 and 2021, a total of 4,541 calls were made to the agency nationwide and 378 rescue emergencies were recorded.
