The Imo State chapter of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) on Saturday inaugurated a new set of executive officers, with Mr. Bathram Uzodinma emerging as chairman.
The swearing-in ceremony, which took place in Owerri, was part of events marking the 41st anniversary of the PCRC—a body set up to foster collaboration between the police and the communities they serve.
Administering the oath of office, the National Chairman of the PCRC, Alhaji Mogaji Olaniyi, urged the new executives to lead with humility, avoid power tussles, and focus on building trust.
“This is a responsibility, not a title. You must lead with grace, not ego,” Olaniyi told the new leadership. He also called on members of the committee and the wider public to give their full support to the Uzodinma-led team.
He praised the outgoing leadership, led by Mr. Chima Chukwunyere, for their remarkable efforts in strengthening the relationship between the police and the public during their tenure. “They set a standard—one that must not only be maintained but improved upon,” he added.
The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, who was represented by the command’s spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye, commended the PCRC’s role in supporting the police. He noted that true community policing could only succeed where there is mutual trust and cooperation.
Congratulating the new officers, Okoye encouraged them to remain steadfast in building a bridge between law enforcement and the public.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Uzodinma pledged to uphold the values of the committee and deepen public confidence in the police. “We will strengthen this bond and ensure the voice of the community continues to be heard,” he said.
Mr. Chukwunyere, the outgoing chairman, used the opportunity to reflect on his years in office. He recalled launching a weekly radio programme in Owerri aimed at improving communication between the police and residents. He also spoke about various outreach efforts to discourage cultism and drug abuse among youths.
“We’ve visited 68 schools across the state so far, just to have those critical conversations with students,” he said. “It’s about catching them young—showing them a better path.”
In a personal show of commitment, Chukwunyere, who also runs the Domino Paramount Hotel in Owerri, revealed that he had provided free accommodation worth ₦7.6 million to police officers passing through the city since 2008.
“It’s my little way of appreciating the work our officers do, often under very difficult circumstances,” he said.
