The Plateau State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called out the Nigerian Army over the abduction of its chairman in Jos South Local Government Area, Hon. Dung Tari.
The state chairman of the party, Hon. Christ Hassan, in a statement, said Tari was abducted by men in Nigerian Army uniform on September 23, 2023, shortly after a meeting with executive members at the party’s office in Bukuru.
According to the PDP, Tari was taken into one of two Toyota Hilux pick-up trucks in military colour and number plates around Total Filling Station, Bukuru, where he had parked to answer phone calls.
Giving details to the circumstances of the arrest, the PDP chairman alleged that the men in army uniform surrounded Tari before proceeding to bundle him into one of the trucks. The report by the PDP chairman has it that one of the army men forced his niece out of his private car. They then proceeded to an unknown destination.
Reacting, the Media Officer of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Captain Oya James, who is in charge of security in Plateau, Bauchi and some parts of Southern Kaduna, said the role of the military is to protect the lives and property of citizens and not to kidnap them.
Speaking with Leadership Newspaper, James challenged the PDP to present OPSH with evidence that the military abducted Tari. James said if provided with such information, it will be investigated and the perpetrators brought to book.
