PDP chieftain gives reasons why Orji Kalu can’t lead Senate

The former senator of Abia North Senatorial District, Mao Ohuabunwa, has expressed opposition to the Senate Presidency ambition of Orji Kalu, the current senate chief whip.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Ohuabunwa, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made his opinion known while appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.

The lawmaker cited Kalu’s pending case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and his previous conviction as reasons why he is not fit for the position. He also stated that Kalu is not competent to represent the people of Abia North Senatorial District.

When asked how he would react if Kalu eventually emerged as the Senate President, Ohuabunwa expressed his dissatisfaction saying, “I will feel terrible because I don’t believe that he is competent to represent the Senate.”

“He has not won the election so I wouldn’t want a Senate President that will be removed tomorrow. He has so much baggage with him. He still has an EFCC case in court, don’t forget that he was convicted. He wasn’t discharged. I am wondering why the EFCC is still holding back on that prosecution.”

It would be recalled that Kalu had defeated the incumbent, Ohuabunwa in 2019.

The former governor was reelected for a second term in the February 25 election this year. He is one of the contenders for the position of Senate President ahead of the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in June. Three weeks ago, he called on his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to zone the position to his district.
