PDP Reacts to Impeachment of Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has hailed the impeachment of Olakunle Oluomo, the former speaker of the state House of Assembly.

Oluomo, who represents Ifo Constituency 1, was sacked on Tuesday by 18 of the 26 lawmakers over accusations of gross misconduct and financial misappropriation. The Assembly, therefore, elected a member representing Odeda Constituency, Oludaisi Elemide, as the new speaker.

“His removal should have come long before now,” Akinloye Bankole, the PDP’s state publicity secretary, said in a recent interview.

He added, “The removal of the former speaker, Honourable Oluomo is long overdue. That is in the sense that since he became the speaker of the House, he has been fingered several times in all manner of misappropriation.

“His emergence after their election last year was so controversial because elected members of the Assembly preferred another person. But for the high-handedness and democratic tendency of the sinking ship called APC, they were able to force him into the house. Ordinarily, he should not be holding such a sensitive office. He was imposed on the house by the leadership of the APC and the governor of the state.

“We must express gratitude to the members of the state Assembly for their courage to put a permanent stop to the era of insensitivity that Hon Oluomo represents.”

Meanwhile, the APC Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, has declined to comment on the matter.
