The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it has not yet chosen candidates for minority leadership positions in the 10th National Assembly.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that in a statement released on Monday, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s publicity secretary, urged Nigerians to disregard any reports claiming that certain lawmakers-elect have already been designated for these positions.
On Sunday, the PDP’s northern caucus in the House of Representatives revealed Ali Isah, a lawmaker from Gombe, as the consensus candidate for the position of minority whip.
Isah was selected over Laori Komati from Adamawa and Beni Lar, an experienced lawmaker from Plateau.
Debo stated, “Such rumours and reports do not accurately reflect the current situation within our party and among our elected members of the National Assembly.”
He emphasised that the PDP is currently focused on maximising its numerical strength alongside other opposition parties to determine the selection of the presiding officers in both chambers of the National Assembly on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.
He said, “For clarity, the PDP is on the same page with our lawmakers-elect in focusing, for now, on maximising our numerical strength with other opposition parties to determine the emergence of the presiding officers of the two chambers of the national assembly on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, and will not allow any distractions at this moment.
“The interest of the PDP is to ensure that whoever emerges as the speaker of the House of Representatives must be a person with long-standing relevant managerial and legislative experience, leadership capacity and past legislative achievements as a member of the House of Representatives.”
The PDP concluded by urging Nigerians to disregard the aforementioned rumours and reports.
