PDP’s Babangida Abdullahi Wins Shira LGA By-Election Amid APC Boycott

It was a moment of celebration for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State on Saturday, as its candidate, Babangida Abdullahi, emerged victorious in the hotly anticipated by-election for the chairmanship of Shira Local Government Area.

Announcing the result in Bauchi, the Chairman of the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC), Ahmed Makama, said Abdullahi secured an overwhelming 47,361 votes — a result that left no doubt about his popularity at the polls.

Trailing far behind were his challengers: Shafiu Haladu of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), who polled just 273 votes, and Yakubu Ayuba of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), who garnered 141.

According to Makama, only three political parties fielded candidates for the election, which took place on Friday, May 24. The by-election became necessary after the previous chairman, Abdullahi Ibrahim Beli, and his deputy, Usman Adamu, were impeached by the Shira Legislative Council back in March over allegations ranging from gross misconduct to abuse of office.

“We received formal communication about the vacancies in both positions, and as a commission, it was our responsibility to conduct a credible election to fill them,” Makama explained.

The election, however, did not go without controversy. The All Progressives Congress (APC), the state’s main opposition party, opted to sit it out, alleging irregularities and a lack of transparency.

“We refused to participate in a process that lacks credibility from the start,” said Aliyu Jalla, APC’s spokesperson in the state. “This election was flawed in its legal framework. It didn’t inspire confidence, so we chose not to dignify it with our participation.”

Despite the APC’s boycott, the polls were conducted peacefully, and voters across Shira turned out to cast their ballots without incident.

For Babangida Abdullahi, the win marks the beginning of a new chapter for Shira Local Government. Many residents see the result as a call for renewed governance and expect quick action on local issues that have long been neglected.
