Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has finally spoken on the upcoming Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 8.
Speaking with journalists in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area on Wednesday, Obi said his main concern was not about politics or party rivalry, but about ensuring that the election is peaceful, transparent, and credible.
“For this election, my party is Labour Party. I want a free and fair election. All the contestants are my friends. As a member of Labour Party, I am supporting our candidate, but not to the extent of vote buying because I can never buy votes,” he stated.
Obi noted that he has campaigned for his party’s candidate but insisted that the people of Anambra must be allowed to freely choose their next governor.
He said he has no personal interest in the contest and will not engage in any action capable of undermining the process.
“I cannot go to the extent of doing anything untoward for the election. I want the election to be totally free and fair. I’m not on the ballot, and I believe that all those contesting are related to me one way or the other. Let Anambra people decide who will be their governor. People should not indulge in vote buying. I’m not against any of them,” he added.
Obi, who governed Anambra from 2006 to 2014, reminded the public that he left office at 42 and has since focused on national development issues rather than personal political gains.
He stressed that every candidate deserves a level playing field.
However, POLITICS NIGERIA earlier reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured voters of adequate security and fair conduct ahead of the November 8 poll.
Recall that Obi had also made similar appeals during the 2021 Anambra governorship election, where he urged citizens to vote their conscience and reject any form of electoral malpractice.
