Peter Obi donates N10 million to Anambra health college

Former Anambra governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to Archbishop Charles Heerey College of Health Sciences and Technology, Nkpor (ACHCOHSTEN), to support its infrastructural development.

Obi announced the donation on Saturday during the institution’s 20th anniversary celebration, which also featured matriculation and convocation ceremonies.

Addressing the students, Obi identified the shortage of health professionals as a critical global challenge and urged Nigeria to invest more in training competent hands.

He encouraged the graduating and matriculating students to take their studies seriously and see themselves as “potential global citizens” capable of contributing to healthcare both locally and internationally.

“I am here today because I believe in you; I believe in education; I believe in building people and institutions,” Obi said.

He added that Nigeria’s current difficulties underscored the need for leaders with competence and integrity..

The LP candidate praised the college for its impact, recalling that he had met graduates of the institution practising in the United States and Britain who proudly introduced themselves as alumni from his time as governor.

The provost, Rev. Sr. Dr. Maria Uzochukwu Ozor, traced the college’s journey from its founding in 2005 as the School of Medical Laboratory Technicians (SOMLAN) to its current multi-departmental status.

She highlighted its achievements, including accreditations, expansion into new health-related disciplines, and the graduation of over 700 professionals now practising across the globe.

She also lauded Obi’s consistent support, recalling that he had previously donated buses and built a female hostel for the school.

The Superior General of the IHM Sisters, Rev. Mother Maureen Akabogu, also expressed gratitude to all benefactors and prayed for continued blessings.

As part of the anniversary activities, Obi received an “Award of Excellence” for his contributions, while the college launched a commemorative book titled Growth and Wonder.
