People’s Gazette has reaffirmed its commitment to the publication made on April 1, 2023, regarding a phone conversation between Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide and presiding Bishop of the Faith Tabernacle.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the audio conversation leaked by the People’s Gazette has received widespread criticism from supporters of Obi since its release. In the leaked audio, Obi referred to the February 25 presidential election as a “religious war.”
Despite this, the former Anambra State governor and the Labour Party candidate remained silent until Wednesday when he denied the authenticity of the audio. He claimed it was a “fake” and blamed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for its release. He also mentioned that there was pressure on him to leave Nigeria after the election.
In addition, Obi, who came in third in the presidential race, threatened to take legal action against People’s Gazette for defamation and libel related to the leaked audio conversation.
In response to the lawsuit threat from Obi, The Gazette’s Deputy Managing Editor, Boladale Adekoya, made a statement on Thursday, firmly standing by the newspaper’s publication. Adekoya revealed that Obi intends to force them to reveal the source of the leaked audio during the trial, but the newspaper is committed to protecting its source at any cost.
“The audio and the context surrounding it were properly sourced and authenticated in line with journalism best practices,” Adekoya said.
“We maintain in no uncertain terms that we will uphold the principle of source protection to any length.”
