Yabagi Sani, the chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) has said that it would be difficult for any Nigerian politician, especially the Northerners to believe Peter Obi’s one-term proposal.
Sani said Obi’s pledge to stay in office for only one term (four years) is unbelievable.
Speaking on Channels Television, Sani also stated that none of the top politicians planning to run for the seat of presisent, including the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party – is a saint.
Sani’s remarks follow Obi’s proposal that he only needs four years to change Nigeria.
Obi, while speaking to his supporters popularly known as Obidients on X’s space said he would only do one tenure should he win the 2027 presidential election.
Reacting to Obi’s remarks, Aani said political dynamics tend to change when politicians get into power.
“Yes, Mr Peter Obi can agree to say: ‘I am going to do one term’ but the northerners will tell you that after Bola Tinubu’s term, if he gets the (second) election, it should come to the North.
“But we are human beings. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Peter Obi is not a saint; he is not somebody who is from another planet. We have seen successive governments trying to see how they can turn the constitution around and give themselves a third term and things like that,” Sani noted.
He added, “This is why it would be difficult for a lot of people to believe Mr Peter Obi that after one term, he would leave. And then how would he even succeed if you look at the sentimental aspect of it, the state capture, and the power of incumbency.”
