The Kano State Police Command has backed down on its initial stance against the National Tijjaniyya Maulud, a religious event held annually in the state.
The event is organized under the leadership of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The police had earlier raised an alarm over intelligence reports suggesting potential terrorist attacks on public gatherings in key locations across the state.
However, the Kano State Government strongly objected to the warning by the law enforcement agency. The government had accused the police of attempting to sabotage an event that has been held annually for 39 years without incident
The police have now reassured the public of their intention to maintain order and security during the event.
In a post on Facebook, the Police Command’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, urged residents to remain vigilant against troublemakers and warned against individuals planning to exploit the event to steal phones under the guise of providing commercial phone charging services near the venue.
“Some individuals are planning to set up phone charging stations near the Maulid venue. Their intention is to steal people’s phones. Therefore, be vigilant and cautious,” he added.
