The Nigeria Police has reacted to the killing of two of its officers in a Sunday night attack on the convoy of an Abia State lawmaker, Ginger Onwusibe.
The police in a statement on Monday said two officers attached to the Abia State Police Command – Inspectors Dunna Jatau and Bala Mohammed – were ambushed by armed assailants while they were on official duty.
Signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Maureen Chinaka, the statement the assailants were dressed in black attire.
She said they launched an attack on the police officers after they dropped off the member of the House of Representatives.
According to Chinaka, the police officers were in a Toyota Hilux when the incident happened.
She added, “On their way back, near the Umuahia South Local Government Area Secretariat in Ubakala, their vehicle was intercepted by armed men dressed in black attire, operating in a Toyota Corolla with tinted windows.”
“The assailants reportedly blocked the road and opened fire on the officers,” Chinaka said.
She noted while Inspector Mohammed who sustained multiple gunshot injuries died on the spot, Inspector Jatau and the driver escaped the attack.
Chinaka noted that the police had combed the area while an investigation is ongoing.
She said, “Tactical teams have been deployed to track the fleeing suspects, and an investigation is ongoing.
“The Abia State Police Command is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice,” Chinaka added.
