The Rivers State Police Command has warned young women that collecting transport money from men without honouring appointments amounts to a criminal offence.
Grace Iringe-Koko, police spokesperson in the state, issued the warning in a video posted on her Facebook page.
Her words: “Why would you collect a transport fare from a man without going to see him? It is an offence.
“A punishable offence is obtaining money under false pretence, 419. I’m here to give you this piece of information because I’m your number one bestie.”
Iringe-Koko said offenders could face up to three years’ imprisonment if reported and convicted.
She explained that the act falls under “obtaining money by false pretence,” which is criminalised under Section 419 of the Criminal Code.
The police spokesperson urged women to desist from dishonest financial dealings, warning that what may appear harmless could have serious legal consequences.
