JUST IN: FG speaks on suspending Facebook in Nigeria over IPOB

The Nigerian Government has denied reports of planning to suspend the use of Facebook in Nigeria over the activities of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The country’s minister of Information, Lai Mohammed had in a statement earlier this week,  appealed to the social media giant to look into IPOB’s use of the platform to incite violence and spread propaganda.

However, while addressing Journalists in Abuja after a Federal Executive Council meeting, the minister disclosed that Facebook assured that it will take action against posts that incite violence on its platform.

Mohammed’s statement is coming after suspected members of the group launched several attacks in South-East.

The pro-secession group has been accused of also spreading misinformation.

The group is responsible for inciting the destruction of Government properties and killing of individuals who violate a ‘sit-at-home’ exercise put in place in the region to protest the continued detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
