JUST IN: Edo House of Assembly serves impeachment notice to deputy governor, Philip Shuaibu

The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shuaibu, has been served a notice of impeachment by 21 State House of Assembly members.

The move comes weeks after Shaibu organised a parallel Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary in the state.

The notice of impeachment alleges “gross misconduct” on the part of Deputy Governor Shuaibu. However, specific details regarding the nature of the misconduct have not been explicitly outlined in the initial reports.

Shuaibu, a prominent figure in Edo politics, has been a key ally of Governor Godwin Obaseki until their relationship went sour after the state chief executive failed to back Shaibu’s governorship bid.

Observers suggest that the impeachment move may be linked to underlying political disagreements between the duo.

The State House of Assembly, consisting of 24 members, requires a two-thirds majority to impeach the Deputy Governor successfully.

With 21 members reportedly backing the impeachment notice, it indicates significant support for the action within the legislative body.
