Pro-Wike Rivers Assembly Amends Education Law, Returns Schools to Government Control

A faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has passed a bill to amend the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Law No. 1 of 2005.

The amendment aims to bring schools in the state to government control.

During the debate on the Report of the House Committee on Education, lawmakers overwhelmingly supported the Bill, stressing the need for the government to reclaim control of schools for more effective management.

They argued that returning the schools to government control would enable better catering to the educational needs of girls in Asari Toru Local Government Area and beyond.

Speaker Amaewhule commended the sponsor of the Bill, Tekenari Granville, representing Asari-Toru state Constituency II, stating that the legislation aims to correct a historical mistake by reclaiming Kalabari Girls High School, Buguma from the church and returning it to government control.

The House, under its procedures, transformed into a Committee of the Whole to meticulously review the Bill’s clauses. After thorough deliberation, the House reverted to Plenary, where the Bill was subsequently passed.
