Protests in Delta state youths march against police brutality [VIDEO]

Hundreds of Nigerians have taken to the streets of Ughelli, Delta State, protesting against rampant police brutality and extortion faced by the country’s youth.

The protesters, seen in a compelling video shared by @KomeNicee on X, are calling on the Nigeria Police Force, the Police Service Commission, and concerned citizens to address the issue and rein in on police personnel who have allegedly become “armed robbers in uniform.”

According to @KomeNicee, the protest is a response to the escalating cases of police brutality in the state, with demonstrators demanding accountability and an end to the unchecked misconduct.

In response to the protest, the Delta State Police Command has issued a warning to Nigerian youths, urging them to desist from the demonstration.

The Command’s spokesman, DSP Edafe Bright, said: “Regarding the ongoing protest in Ughelli, the Command wishes to inform members of the public that yesterday 13th February 2024, policemen from Ughelli Area Command intercepted an unregistered Benz GLK without a plate number in Ekuigbo community.

”The men confronted the four boys who could not establish ownership of the car.

“In an attempt to arrest them, some of the youths attacked the police, destroyed their vehicle, and broke the head of one of the officers.”

DSP Edafe Bright emphasized that the police would not be deterred from performing their constitutional duties and stated that nine suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack, assuring that they would be charged to court.
