Rage Of Nature: Prominent Reactions Trail Maiduguri Floods Disaster

Some prominent Nigerians, including state governors and serving and former federal lawmakers, have continued to react to the devastating floods that have taken over Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital.

It is understood that the flood, which of as a result of the collapse of water channels at the Alau Dam, displaced many residents of Maiduguri.

Residential quarters, including parts of the Shehu of Borno Palace, Maiduguri Central Market, and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, have been submerged.

Roads and bridges have also been submerged resulting in the inaccessibility of many areas.

Reports say GRA, Maiduguri Zoo, College of Nursing, College of Agriculture, and School of Health Technology, among others, are areas also badly hit by the flood.

In his reaction to the disaster, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, in a passionate post on his X handle on Tuesday afternoon, expressed solidarity with the people of the state.

Fintiri prayed that God to grant Governor Babagana Zulum and his people the strength and ease to navigate through the difficult time.

He also expressed optimism that they will overcome the difficult time.

He wrote, “In these trying times, our hearts are with the people of Borno State as they face the devastating floods that have displaced families, destroyed properties worth billions, and claimed countless lives and livelihoods.

“To my brother, Governor @ProfZulum, may Allah grant you and your people strength and ease as you navigate through this difficult moment. The government and people of Adamawa stand in solidarity with you, offering our prayers and support. Together, we will overcome. May Allah’s protection and mercy be with Borno State.”

Reacting to the incident, a member of the House of Representatives representing Biu, Kwaya Kusar, Bayo, and Shani federal constituency of Borno State, Rt. Hon. Muktar Betara Aliyu said he was saddened by the disaster and offered prayers to victims.

He wrote on his X handle, “I am deeply saddened by the recent devastating floods that have affected some parts of Maiduguri: Monday Market, Post Office area, Gwange, Moromoro Customs Bridge, Zoo, Bulabullin, and other areas.
“The damage and disruption caused by these floods have undoubtedly placed an immense burden on our communities and the government.

“In the face of such adversity, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Let us continue to support one another, show resilience, and work together towards recovery and rebuilding.”

On his part, a former Kaduna Senator, Shehu Sani in a post on his X handle, described the disaster as a “tragedy of extreme proportions.”

Sani, while commiserating with victims, opined that the flood is a “rage of nature.”

He wrote, “The Maiduguri flood is a tragedy of extreme proportions.That is the rage of nature. Climate change or not, these days no country is safe when it comes to natural disasters such as floods. I wish to commiserate with the victims.”
