Afenifere, a socio-cultural group for the Yoruba people of Nigeria, has described a recent visit led by its acting leader, Ayo Adebanjo to the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, as “purely humanitarian”.
The group’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, disclosed this on Tuesday while speaking with journalists shortly after its monthly meeting held in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that a delegation of Afenifere group had last Tuesday visited Tinubu at his Ikoyi, Lagos residence following his return from medical trip abroad. Afenifere’s visit had caused a bit of controversy among supporters of their cause. But Ajayi has now explained the reason for their visit.
Ajayi said, “The visit of our leaders to former Governor Bola Tinubu is purely on humanitarian ground. He is a Yoruba son. We do not forsake ourselves.
“Afenifere members are Omoluabis and humanists. What the leaders have done is the hallmark of thoroughbred Yoruba men and women.
“We may disagree on principles but we are not political enemies. Even if there is a disagreement on issues, it does not mean that we should not relate.”
Although many persons have started pro-Tinubu campaigns, the former Lagos State Governor has not officially declared his intention to run for President in 2023.
The Afenifere meeting deliberated on various issues concerning the nation, particularly the ways they affect the Yorubas.
