Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, is being held by Benin Republic authorities ‘because of his safety and security’, one of his lawyers, Ibrahim Salami has said.
“I believe the government of Benin Republic will be just. I believe Sunday Igboho is being held in custody here because of his own security,” Salami said in a video interview published on BBC News Yoruba on Monday morning.
“But it is taking long now. We are taking it easy with the government of Benin. We’ve been in discussion with them to release him so that he can take care of himself medically.”
POLITICS NIGERIA had reported that armed security men stormed Igboho’s residence in Ibadan on July 1, an incident that resulted in a gunfire that sparked tension in the Soka area of the Oyo State capital.
Hours later, the Department of State Services (DSS) claimed responsibility in a statement, saying the invasion was a raid by a joint team of security operatives.
It claimed that Igboho and others plotted to wage a violent insurrection against the Nigerian State and asked the Yoruba nation agitator to turn himself in at the nearest security agency.
Igboho fled Nigeria to Benin but was later arrested by authorities en route to Germany. It is believed that the Federal Government is making efforts to extradite him.
