Reps Propose New Law to Make Voting Compulsory for All Nigerians

The House of Representatives is considering a new law that would make it mandatory for every eligible Nigerian to vote during elections.

The proposal to change the Electoral Act 2022 passed its second reading on Thursday. It was introduced by Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, and another lawmaker, Daniel Ago.

While explaining the bill, Ago said the goal is to increase the number of people who take part in elections. According to him, many Nigerians do not vote, and making it compulsory could help change that.

However, there was opposition to the bill by some lawmakers.

One of them, Mark Esset, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Akwa Ibom State, said forcing people to vote may not fix the real problems in the system.

“We shouldn’t build on a shaky foundation,” Esset said. “Many Nigerians don’t vote because they don’t trust the process. If we want to make voting compulsory, we must first make sure their votes truly count.”

In recent years, the voter participation in the country has reduced.
