Rivers crisis: Gov Fubara bows to pressure, signals willingness for further concessions to Wike

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers has declared that he is ready to extend further concessions to sustain peace and stability within the state.

Governor Fubara said he is willing to engage in dialogue and compromise, indicating a shift towards a conciliatory approach, adding that there is no price too big to pay to ensure that peace prevails.

He made this known during his address at the third convocation and 6th Founders’ Day ceremonies of the PAMO University of Medical Sciences in Obio/Akpor local government area.

He emphasized the criticality of maintaining peace, affirming that no price is too high to secure lasting tranquillity among the people of Rivers State.

The reconciliatory tone echoes recent negotiations orchestrated by President Bola Tinubu, which resulted in a peace pact involving Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesome Wike, the current minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The terms of this agreement reinstated Wike’s loyalists into the state cabinet and called for collaboration with lawmakers who had previously defected from Fubara’s party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor promised that the provision of quality education and affordable public healthcare services would remain two vital priorities of his administration that were driven to achieve universal access for all Rivers people.

He said: “While some progress has been made, it is obvious that a lot still needs to be done to achieve our collective aspirations for universal access to quality education and healthcare for our people. I need not say that no society can progress without educated and healthy people.”

Noteworthy figures present at the convocation, including former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Dr. Peter Odili, emphasized the institution’s significance in grooming future medical practitioners and ambassadors of excellence.
