Rivers Speaker Reacts to Appeal Court Ruling Annulling Expulsion of Amaewhule, 26 Other Lawmakers

The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo, has said it will appeal the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal, which nullified the expulsion of Martin Amaewhule and 24 other lawmakers from the Assembly.

Oko-Jumbo made the disclosure while speaking during a plenary session on Friday.

According to him, the Appeal Court erred in its decision, stating that the Rivers State High Court had the jurisdiction to hear and determine the case.

He also revealed that the Assembly’s lawyers have filed an appeal at the Supreme Court, challenging the Judgment of the Court of Appeal.

He said, “We strongly believe that the Court of Appeal was in error when it held that the Rivers State High Court lacked the Jurisdiction to hear and determine SUIT NO PHC/1512/CS/2024,” he said.

“Accordingly, we have instructed our lawyers and they have filed an appeal to the Supreme Court of Nigeria Challenging the Judgement of the Court of Appeal delivered on the 4th Day of July 2024.”

The lawmakers, who met at the temporary chamber at the Government House in Port Harcourt, also considered two bills – the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency Bill, 2024, and the Rivers State Transport Reform Bill, 2024 – which passed their first reading.
