Rivers State Assembly Crisis: Appeal Court to Deliver Judgement Today

A ruling is expected today at the Appeal Court in Port Harcourt, in a suit seeking the reversal of the order restraining Martin Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers from performing legislative duties and vacating their seats.

The decision of the court could put to bed the prolonged crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The lawmakers are challenging the High Court’s decision that favoured Victor Oko-Jumbo, the factional Speaker of the assembly.

It should be recalled that year, Justice Dagogo Jack ruled in favour of Oko-Jumbo, restraining Amaewhule and others from performing legislative duties and vacating their seats. An interlocutory injunction was also granted against them.

After hearing arguments on Thursday, the three-judge Appeal Court panel, led by Justice Jimi Olukayode-Bada, announced their readiness to deliver a ruling today.

All counsels have been instructed to be present in court by 9 a.m.
