FLASHBACK: What FG said about remains of people who died of Coronavirus

The death of Abba Kyari, deceased Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, has continued to generate controversies online.

Many critics of the government said it was wrong for the presidency to have allowed Mr Kyari’s body transfer to Abuja from Lagos.

POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that on April 4, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, claimed that the government won’t release the body of those who died fighting Coronavirus to their relatives to avoid being contagious.

He said: “Coronavirus is very dangerous and contagious; there is no medicine for it yet and it is not just capable of killing, overwhelming health-care system, it will destroy the economy. In some countries, they are putting dead bodies in big refrigerators because the morgues are filled up. Nigerians should not forget that these are not the type of corpses that can be claimed for burial because it must be handled by the ministry of health.”

He called for the cooperation of citizens and asked them to “stay safe, obey simple instructions of basic hygiene and social distancing,” adding, “In a few weeks, we will resume our normal life”.

As of the time of filing this report, the remains of Abba Kyari have been buried in the national cemetery.
