Speaking in the weekly briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team in Abuja on Thursday, Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali has said security in Nigeria has “significantly stabilised” despite killings plaguing the country.
Several killings in various parts of the country take place on a daily basis, and there have been reports on how dozens of Nigerians were killed with little to no intervention from the police. At least 200 people, including security personnel, were killed across Nigeria in the past four weeks.
“The security situation in the country has been significantly stabilised though we are still experiencing isolated cases of crime and threats to public safety, peace and security in some parts of the country,” said Alkali.
“The Nigeria Police Force is however unrelenting in rejigging its public safety strategies to adequately contain prevailing and emerging crime trends across the country.”
Alkali maintained that “the strong collaboration between the police, armed forces and other security agencies led to the improved security situation in the country”.
“Let me state categorically that the new spirit of collaboration between the Nigeria Police, the Nigeria Armed Forces, the Department of State Services and other security and intelligence agencies in the country has indeed spurred a common front in reducing crime and criminality nationwide,” Alkali continued.
Alkali assured that the police are deploying “well-coordinated intelligence operation to tackle banditry, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity bedevilling the country”.
The police are also “deepening community engagement to weaken recruitment drive by secessionist groups”, he said.
