Senate Holds Solemn Valedictory Session for Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah

The Senate on Tuesday, 19 November, convened a valedictory session to honour the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South before his death on 26 July 2024.

A sombre atmosphere enveloped the National Assembly as the casket bearing Senator Ubah’s remains lay in state at the foyer of the White House wing, directly in front of the Senate Chamber.

His seat in the chamber was adorned with flowers and draped in the colours of the Nigerian flag.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, dressed in traditional Isi-Enyi attire with a red cap, led the session. He described Ubah as a “passionate advocate for his people and a voice of reason in the chamber.” Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, also in traditional Isi-Agwu attire, echoed Akpabio’s sentiments, highlighting Ubah’s contributions to national discourse.

The session attracted notable dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige, and former Anambra Central Senator Uche Ekwunife. Non-senators were also allowed to pay their respects, reflecting the late senator’s wide-reaching influence.

In his remarks, Vice President Shettima commended Ubah’s unwavering dedication to Anambra State, stating, “He lived and served with an unyielding commitment to justice and development.”

The session was marked by moments of reflection, as senators and guests shared memories of Ubah’s impactful legacy. His untimely demise has left a void in the Senate, particularly among his Anambra South constituents.

The valedictory session concluded with prayers for his family and constituents, ensuring that Senator Ubah’s memory will remain etched in the nation’s legislative history.
