Senate Makes Last-Minute Attempt to Halt Planned Protest, Issues Resolution After Emergency Session

The Senate has appealed to the organizers of the planned nationwide protests scheduled for August 1-10, 2024 to exercise patience and give President Bola Tinubu’s administration more time to implement its economic policies.

The lawmakers made the plea during an emergency session convened in Abuja, on Wednesday.

The Red Chamber urged the protesters to shelve their plans, citing the need for the administration’s policies to mature.

The Senators argued that some of the measures introduced in the last year, such as the new national minimum wage of N70,000 and the student loan implementation, require more time to yield the desired results.

Presiding over the closed-door session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said that one year is not sufficient for the policies to take effect.

“The Senate, in closed-door, reviewed the impending protests and urges that one year is not long enough for the policies being implemented by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to yield the desired results,” Akpabio stated.

The Senate pledged to legislate on all matters that will bring succour to the people.

The emergency session was attended by 75 of the 109 senators.
