SERAP Reacts to DSS, Prisons Officials’ Face-off Over Emefiele’s Custody

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has reacted to the fistcuffs between the Department of State Services (DSS) and operatives of the Nigeria Correctional Service.

Politics Nigeria reported that DSS operatives and prison officers engaged in face-off after the trial of former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele, at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday.

Justice Nicolas Oweibo-led court granted Emefiele bail after the DSS leveled a two-count charge bordering on illegal possession of firearms against the former CBN boss.

After the court judgement, operatives of the correctional services were moving Emefiele to their facility when DSS intercepted them and tried to whisk him away, leading to a fight between the two security agencies in front of the court.

Reacting to the incident, SERAP urged the Tinubu administration to obey the court order which granted Emefiele bail.

“BREAKING: The Tinubu administration must hold to account those responsible for the fight between the DSS and prison officials over the custody of Emefiele. The administration must obey the court order granting him bail, and end the attack on the integrity of our justice system,” SERAP said via Twitter.
