Seun Kuti Ends Hunger Strike, Resumes Eating in Custody

Seun Kuti, the famous Afrobeat singer currently under remand, has reportedly ended his hunger strike after facing rejection from fellow detainees while in police custody.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the incident started after a video of Seun allegedly slapping a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge on May 13 went viral, leading to an arrest order issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba.

Seun, accompanied by his lawyers and a family representative, voluntarily turned himself in for questioning the following Monday. He was subsequently arraigned at the Sabo, Yaba Chief Magistrate Court on Tuesday, where he was granted bail.

However, the court stipulated that the bail would take effect 48 hours later to allow the police to conclude their investigation, resulting in Seun being remanded in police custody.

After the preliminary investigations were concluded and Seun was taken to the cell at the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department in Panti, Yaba, Lagos, the hunger strike by the musician began.

Reports indicate that Seun faced opposition from other detainees who strongly objected to his presence in their cell.

To his surprise, the cell leader ordered Seun to remain standing until he and the other inmates accepted his inclusion and allowed him to sit. In response, the inmates banged on the metal protective door, demanding that Seun be removed from their cell.

However, it is now understood that Seun managed to negotiate a resolution, eventually reaching an agreement by paying a sum of N25,000 to secure their acceptance.

Seun’s anger at this turn of events led him to commence a hunger strike, which lasted for nearly two days before he ultimately decided to resume eating.
