A deadly gun battle has been reported between the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram terrorists around Arege, Malam Fatori in Borno State, with several outlaws killed.
POLITICS NIGERIA learned that the shooting happened at about 5:40 pm on Thursday.
Prior to the confrontation, there was a report that Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’adati wal-Jihad (JAS) Buduma faction had deployed foot soldiers in the general area within Lake Chad, which could have been a prelude to this attack.
On Tuesday, another confrontation broke out near Tumbum Gini in the northern axis of Borno, after ISWAP ambushed Boko Haram terrorists.
This newspaper reports that since 2009, Boko Haram has launched an uprising in northeast Nigeria.
Its attacks have spread to neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting a military response.
The group has also become splintered, with one faction pledging allegiance to ISIL (ISIS).
About 355,000 people have been murdered and three million civilians displaced in more than a decade of fighting in the country, according to the United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Nigeria.
